Thor No More

At long last I plucked up the courage to start the final cut-in on the blonde synthetic wig that I had made previously (see: Making Waves).  Its long, Thor-like locks have given way to a much more respectable pompadour style.

I worked on it most of the afternoon, and it's getting close to where I want it to be, although it still needs some finessing.  I have realized that I really need to take a barbering course.  My cutting skills are not good enough for this kind of work!

The synthetic hair also made my job a LOT more difficult!  The synthetic is great for longer styles, but requires a lot of work with the curling iron to make it look natural after it has been cut.

Anyway, here are a couple of photos of the cut-in so far:

  1. I recently bought this book called Scissors and Comb Haircutting, A Cut By Cut Guide For Home Haricutters by Bob Ohnstad and it's pretty informative. The hairstyles in it are out of date but all the information is still relevant. There is even information about hairgrain and hair growth direction that I can see helping me with ventilating my next wig. You can buy the book on amazon.

I will say after wearing my synthetic wig longer than a week, that the heat from my head has tamed the hair a lot. It's looking better and better the longer I wear it. It has shaped itself to my head.

The haircut looks great and I love how the blonde synthetic hides the knots. If I do make a full synthetic again and wear it, it will be blonde.

    1. Thanks for the tip! I will check out the book on Amazon.

Glad to hear that your hair is settling in. It usually takes a while for it to start to feel natural. I think you should start your own blog! :D

The blonde really does look good - so natural and undetectable. One thing you could consider if you want to make another darker piece is to use synthetic everywhere but the front hairline. That way you can bleach the knots and expose the hairline, and it will look completely natural. The synthetic blends amazingly well with the Brazilian hair I told you about, and you get the best of both worlds...

    2. I did a tumblr for a while and felt very alone there, no one commented or even followed me. So I gave up. I might start a blog as I get more experience and have more to share. I would like a place I can show and tell all my hard work.

    3. Lol yeah, it's the same for me. I get a lot of views at times, but very few people comment. Well, I would subscribe if you started a blog! :P

  2. You did a pretty good job, Dave. Just need to take some of the density down from the top to blend the hairs more into a lighter transition, but I'm impressed. I loathe cutting a unit, especially after you've spent hours and hours on a full ventilation. Kinda scary that in one false move you ruin it.

    1. Thanks, I'm actually going for a bit of a disconnected undercut, so I won't take too much more off the top. But yeah, cutting them in is definitely my least favourite part of the process...!

  3. Ok, the disconnected cut, so you are ahead of the game. just a little extra snipping, you did an excellent job.
